The drive is amazing with some stunning
views over rolling, wooded hills and we stopped off along the way to hike some
waterfall trails.
We arrived at Loft Mountain campsite for
out first night under the stars and put up the tent without argument.
Beautiful views at sunset from the mountain side |
Like excited kids we got out our new
camping stove and cooked up some leftovers before an early night… it was a long
night. A long, cold night on rocky ground. Luckily, Auntie Pia had the common
sense we were clearly lacking to force some extra blankets on us before we
left.
Lessons learnt:
- Exercise mats are not good unless your camping on a pristine lawn
- Check where you pitch your tent carefully, especially for big rocks
- We have become soft, perhaps always have been
- Always have socks
My attempts to start a fire with my coveted
Bear Grylls Ultimate Knife eventually paid off and we HAD FIRE! Unfortunately we couldn’t take it in the tent
with us.
Yes that is a machete in Neil's hand! |
The morning brought more surprises, a scene
from Bambi as dears and rabbit grazed together in the rising sun outside our
tent. And Trisha decided she wasn’t
starting which was highly inconvenient being 50 miles from the nearest town and
3,500 ft up a mountain.
After a call to a breakdown company we were
finally told no one could be bothered to come and get us and even if they did,
the cost was going to burn a crater sized hole in the pocket. As our adventure mantra goes - trust the
universe... Trisha finally decided to wake up. We stopped by a mechanic in
Waynesboro where all the staff looked like twin brothers. It was the starter
motor that probably caused the trouble but as she was “running jus fine now
mister” we decided to press on to Asheville, North Carolina. (FK - I bet Heather knows a song about there!)
